My stay, was a family holiday, spent at Dorada Palace, during early May 2009.
Group of 4- (3 adults, one of which is a wheelchair user) and a 14 year old.
From a “active” wheelchair users view, the hotel is big,(impressive by day and by night) very spacious, smooth flooring (making wheeling, easy) it has 3 pools, one large main pool ( with chair hoist), one smaller pool (at the rear), and a adults pool, on the roof (not seen by me).
The first thing I noticed, was the road leading up to the hotel, was quite a SLOPE, (a small assistance is all that is needed). There are 5 lifts, to all floors, rooms being apartment to, one side, of the hotel, rest of the rooms to the other. Wide corridors, wide doors, rooms were clean and tidy, two (large) single beds, TV, wardrobe, drawers, patio door, on to balcony, ours was room 237- overlooking the rear pool (which gets the evening SUN, alot of people were sitting out on their balconies during early evening). Air con/heating (which is electric, so comes on when you insert your, door entry card, in the box, on the wall),not many plug outlets (and they seem too be behind things ??, bathroom seemed OK (if on the smallish side) with over bath shower, toilet, bidet, basin.
Plenty of activities, are put on, in the kids club, towards the rear, of the hotel and for the evening entertainment in the (large) bar area, 5 large TV`s, 1 projection TV screen, 1 stage area. (while we were staying, alot of football was being shown, much to the delight of the crowd- but it seemed VERY LOUD.
Internet is via 4 computers, in the lower floor, alongside the car park, laundry room and toilets, toilets are on the main floors (male, female and disabled)( had to laugh, the hand drier in the disabled toilet is mounted very high, even when stood up !!).
One bonus, the reps didn’t seem to sell any excursions, which was good, maybe as public transport is widely available. Reception will ring for a taxi, and by the time you get to the pavement, the taxi is there!! Its that quick !!.
We spent two days at Portaventura (theme park) (hire a mobility scooter (if you have mobility problems) as the park is HUGE and on a hill.
Two day trips to Barcelona, on the train from Salou station (always validate your ticket, in the RED ticket machines, BEFORE, you board the train—and beware the massive gap, between the platform and the train, plus the large step, up to the train. After this the trip is worth it (12 euros return, 90 mins trip to Barcelona).
In Salou, plenty of flat areas to explore,(promenade stretches along way) with toilets dotted along the way (these are small buildings with slatted wall “fences” most are raised, off the ground, so STEPS are evident).
We took a ride on the “Noddy” train, around Salou, which is good to get your bearings and it has a wheelchair accessible section, to the rear. 3 Euros-return trip (about an hourish).
Salou, seemed very agreeable for visitors with mobility problems, I saw plenty of people in wheelchairs or walking aids. (and also in the hotel, was some disabled people, so it must be OK).
I have more photos at flickr
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanroygbiv/sets/72157618485936629/The hotel has a very large restaurant (buffet style), accessed by a glass lift, with plenty of choice, good quality, main section, section for kids, vegetarian/multi-diet section, with continental and English foods. You get your table reserved for every meal, we were half board, (drinks at evening meal are extras).
A very enjoyable stay, Salou is very good place for a holiday, but too “touristy” and English, for my liking.
